About Malapascua Island Marine Protected Area

Located off the northern tip of Cebu Island in the Philippines, Malapascua Island Marine Protected Area encompasses approximately 4,500 hectares of coral reefs, seagrass beds, and rich marine habitats. Established to safeguard the island’s unique biodiversity, the area is internationally recognized for its healthy populations of thresher sharks, which can be reliably spotted at Monad Shoal—a submerged plateau and one of the region’s most celebrated dive sites. The reef systems boast a colorful array of hard and soft corals supporting thousands of species including reef fishes, sea turtles, and endemic critters like the rare ornate ghost pipefish. Visitors to this marine sanctuary engage primarily in scuba diving and snorkeling, exploring walls, caves, and underwater pinnacles teeming with marine life. Beyond diving, the island offers opportunities for kayaking, beachcombing, and cultural experiences in the local fishing village. Conservation efforts by government agencies and local communities aim to control fishing, reduce destructive practices, and promote sustainable tourism to preserve the fragile ecosystem. The island's white sandy beaches and laid-back atmosphere complement its outdoor pursuits, making it an appealing destination for marine ecotourism. Visitors are drawn not only by the underwater wonders but also by the chance to connect with a community that balances livelihood and marine stewardship.
